Department Description

The Strategy, Policy & Insight (Function) are trusted thought-leaders bringing expert strategy, policy, market & audience insight – challenging and advising the business to drive delivery of Channel 4’s strategy and remit.

The purpose of the new centralised Audience Insights (Subfunction) is to be independent thought leaders at the heart of Channel 4’s creative and commercial decision-making, bringing a single source of truth and big picture perspective, challenging and advising the business to ensure profitable business growth through the use of data.

Within the new centralised operating Insights model (where all audience and market insight in C4 is centralised into the Audience Insight team), each C-Suite Leader (CEO, Chief Content Officer, Chief Operating Officer, Chief Revenue Officer, Chief Marketing Officer and the Exec Committee as a body) and their Senior Leaders have a dedicated Insight Business Partner (BP) who prioritizes and agrees their Insight requirements, aligned to the strategic C4 pillars. BP Analysts directly source available analysis and where additional, bespoke research or specialised analysis is required, the BP will commission this from the relevant Specialist Lead, managing jointly the presentation back of recommendations to the C-Suite Leader.

Job Purpose

Data Expert leading a team of multidisciplined specialists to provide best in class insight & reporting for C4 C-Suite leaders. Owns the portfolio of Tools & Methods used in the wider Insight function & the user education programme to ensure effective deployment of these tools to analysts in the Insight function as well as multiple leaders and functional specialists across C4 where self-serve tools are available).

KEY RESPONSIBILTIES

  • This role leads a team (which brings together all Reporting Subject Matter Experts from across C4 into one single Centre of Excellence. The role is responsible for combining multiple, highly complex viewer, product, social, sales and distribution data sets and running analysis for reports, enabling C4 Exec and Senior Leaders to decide where to invest / what trends to plan for / what products to take to market.
  • Prioritise Reporting and Data Analytics requirements from C-Suite and Senior Leaders via the Insight Business Partners within available in-house resources, balancing team capacity, timelines and available budget to maximise the ROI of reporting and analysis for C4. This is a massive volume of requests and requires complex and joined-up / cross department thinking to interpret Exec and Senior Leader thinking, leverage drivers and data sets across each C4 area and meet multiple needs through a streamlined set of data and reporting.
  • Where the role makes a decision to reject a request from the business for data modelling, this will involve explaining the decision and reasoning to the C- Suite/Senior Leader.
  • Deliver via a team of specialist Reporting Developers, the agreed suite of regular & repeated insight & reporting required by C4 leaders to track and monitor C4 performance (for example Tableau Dashboards, Daily/Weekly/Qtrly updates for all audience data content).
  • Deliver via a team of multi-disciplined specialists (Digital Marketing (MarTech), Search Engine Optimisation, Social data) best in class and high value performance analysis & recommendations on which C4 Senior Leaders can base their business decisions.
  • Lead & drive the rollout of self-serve access to regular reports across C4 to meet agreed targets and driving maximum cost and resource efficiency for C4, educating Exec and Senior Leaders on how to leverage insight from streamlined and connected reports and data sets and building communities within the Insight function and within the C4 business to break down silo thinking and drive connected thinking on data
  • Critically assess the multiple C4 data sets (called foundations) managed by Technology, collate input from the Lead Insights BP & other 4 other Insight Specialist Leads; prioritise, recommend & champion the improvements on behalf of the function, influencing the Head of Data Architecture & Data Strategy to drive a truly joined-up, viewer-centric approach to data as the source for all analysis (this will be a major transformational requirement in the first 12 + months then will move to a more stable state of regular review with minor changes).
  • Define & manage the suite of analysis Tools & Methods (eg Reporting Dashboards, Modelling, 3rd Party Data (Adobe), multiple tools for social/web applications, Data Robot etc) used across all Insight activities, assessing latest innovative tools, taking input from other 4 x Audience Insight Specialist Leads and the Insight Lead BP. Make the final decision ( with power of veto) on the purchase of new tools for the Insights function to optimise ROI value for C4 managing within the budget of £5.2m pa by understanding, assessing and validating the business case for each and taking a pan-C4 view to optimise the impact of all spend.
  • Define & create education & coaching programmes on all tools across the Insight function to ensure maximum impact, delivering direct or through a team of coaches.
  • In collaboration with Technology, lead on the programme of innovation and development in cross-platform audience measurement, including representing Channel 4 in broader cross-industry initiatives such as CFlight and Project Origin
  • Develop the team, coaching for excellence and growing the team skills & capabilities in critical new areas such as social and web.

  • Lead Insight Business Partner and 4 Business Partners & their Analyst teams.
  • All C-Suite & Senior Leaders in C4.
  • 7 direct reports and a total team of 14.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Essential:

  • Experience of data or reporting leadership including multiple & mixed data sets.
  • Strong business understanding including role of analytics in driving leader decisions and key levers impacting leader decisions across content, product, distribution and sales.
  • Excellent understanding of access & analytics tools including Reporting Dashboards, Modelling, 3rd Party data (Adobe), tools across social platforms, Data Robot.
  • Strong influencing skills of C4 peers, C-Suite & Senior Leaders as well as authority & gravitas to represent C4 externally with industry partners and on public platforms.
  • Strong communication & presentation skills with the ability to present complex and detailed recommendations clearly and succinctly to C-Suite / Senior Leaders.
  • Good interpersonal and collaboration skills including capability to drive learning across the Insight team.
  • Excellent ability to deal with data complexity and proven track record of working with technology data teams to drive a clear route to data integrity & foundation.
  • Strong leadership / people management skills (min 2 years) including coaching of team members.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects and priorities, manage timescales and delivery across the team often under pressure.

Desirable:

  • Sector experience in a media or broadcast company including exposure to product & viewer data (ideally social /web based)
