Grade: £50,466 - £60,330 (National Framework) or £55,484 - £65,348 (London Framework - if you are London office based or homebased and live within the boundary of the M25)
Contracted Hours: Full time 37 hours per week

The purpose of this role is to ensure CQC has the best tools to provide data visualisation and reporting development results in impactful and easy to interpret reports, dashboards and related insight products across the organisation.

What you will bring…

We are looking for someone who can set the standards for data visualisation and visual report design across the organisation, to ensure consistency, quality and accessibility in all data visualisation outputs. You will reinforce and share good practice as well as acting as a Subject Matter Expert to support analysts and other colleagues in the development of Power BI visualisations and dashboards.

You will also be expected to line manage a team of visualisation specialists and role model behaviours that drive efficiency and quality to deliver the Data & Insight operating model.


• Set the standards for data visualisation and visual report design across the organisation to ensure consistency, quality and accessibility in all data visualisation outputs.
• Reinforce and share good practice, standardisation and common approaches to ensure colleagues across the organisation are producing high quality data visualisations and visual reports.
• Act as the Subject Matter Expert, support analysts and other colleagues in the development of Power BI visualisations and dashboards.
• Support projects and product development where specialist skills and knowledge are required, bringing innovative approaches, overcoming challenges, and helping to build capability.
• Ensure standards are understood and adopted across Data & Insight and the wider organisation, identifying and addressing barriers when they arise.
• Support in defining and understanding data visualisation and reporting requirements, ensuring they are unambiguous and understood.
• Contribute to the selection and design of visualisations that successfully communicate complex data and insights.
• Support the review and quality assurance of visualisation outputs.
• Drive a culture of reusable visualisation components.
• Coach and train colleagues in theoretical and technical visualisation design and implementation.
• Identify new techniques and tools to advance CQC's approach to data visualisation and reporting.
• Line manage a team of visualisation specialists, facilitating flexible deployment in accordance with unit priorities.
• Lead and facilitate multi-disciplinary teams from across the unit to deliver outcomes.
• Assure that appropriate quality control and assurance is undertaken to ensure consistency, accuracy and relevance of unit outputs.
• Help shape, steer and assure insight work to help Data & Insight deliver best value for stakeholders across CQC and help shape the long-term Data & Insight direction to meet organisational needs.
• Role model behaviours that drive efficiency and quality through continuous improvement and effective change to deliver the Data & Insight operating model.
• Ensure that the views of the public and people using services are in the design and delivery of Data & Insight services and products.
• Promote a strong data culture across CQC in line with the organisational data strategy.
• Stay abreast of internal and external developments in data, policy and structures of care delivery ensuring appropriate awareness within the team.
• Role model inclusive behaviours in everyday interactions.
• Promote a culture of respect and fairness and understand personal responsibilities around delivering against CQC diversity and inclusion strategy.

Essential Skills and Experience:

• Educated to degree level or have equivalent professional experience.
• Relevant professional qualification in data visualisation and/or data communication.
• Excellent understanding of data communication, visualisation techniques and best practice for data design.
• Expert knowledge of BI tools and data visualisation libraries and associated coding languages.
• Able to balance the principles of great visual design with the constraints of available tooling.
• Experience defining templates and standards for data visualisation.
• Excellent decision-making skills and sound judgement with minimal supervision and able to coach others to develop their decision-making skills.
• Proven experience in managing conflict and articulating coherent rationales for action.
• Proven ability to anticipate problems, know how to prevent them and understand how problems fit into the larger picture. Can also develop problem solving capabilities in others.
• Expert ability to manage stakeholder expectations and facilitate discussions across high risk and complexity or under constrained timescales.
• Expert understanding of relevant data sources, tools and systems including knowledge of how to influence senior stakeholders in data approaches.
• Proven ability to tailor the communication of insight in the most appropriate and compelling way for the audience (including large external audiences), including through storytelling and visualisation and have experience in leading others to do so.


• Knowledge and understanding of the health and care sectors.
• Experience in coaching and mentoring colleagues in data visualisation
• Good understanding of the principles of user interaction, experience design and good visual practice.
• Experience delivering training on use of BI tools.
• Experience using Microsoft Power BI for reporting and visualisation.
• Experience using JavaScript libraries such as D3, jQuery for visualisation.
